Taiwan is losing one half of its Olympic champion badminton duo.

Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin made history at the Paris Olympics this summer by becoming the first ever men’s doubles team to successfully defend an Olympic gold medal in the sport. Lee Yang had said that he intended to retire at the end of this year, and on Sunday he made good on those plans.

34-year-old politician Yang Chih-yuan is the first Taiwanese person to be found guilty of secession since Beijing released its new judicial guidelines for sentencing "diehard Taiwan independence separatists."

Yang was previously a member of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) until 2011 when he co-founded his own fringe party: The Taiwanese National Party. He was arrested and detained in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, in 2022 after visiting China to participate in a Go competition and was sentenced two years later for endangering national security due to his former participation in "pro-independence political activity."
