Playing along with backing tracks is a fundamental way to practice improvisation, especially in the jazz idiom. While not a substitute to playing and interacting with real people in real time, it allows the student to focus on developing a personal language and negotiate the harmonic challenges of the standard repertoire. Most important, it's also a lot of fun!
With a nod to legendary educators like James Aebersold, we offer carefully crafted recordings of a rhythm section playing without any lead or solo instrument. We tried to vary the tempo, time feel and instrumentation for each video. A lead sheet is shown with the appropriate chord progression.
The music is missing the crucial element, and it's up to you to play the tune and improvise!
