The old one is the style of a Benelux country. Not surprising considering the Dutch settlers.

The 🍊⚪🔵 (South African Oranje, Blanje, Blou) was actually introduced in 1928 as the "Union Flag" during Jan Smut's rule, basing out of the old original flag of the Netherlands 🧡⬜💙 (oranje-blanje-bleu/Prinsenvlag (Prince's Flag)) since the gov't was predominantly governed by Afrikaners, but at that time, apartheid did not yet exist. When the Nasionale Party won the 1948 elections, Daniel F. Malan became prime minister and introduced apartheid, they kept the flag, even also when Hendrik Verwoerd proclaimed South Africa🍊⚪🔵 as a republic from a dominion of the British monarchy, they keep the flag despite Verwoerd attempted to change the flag. 2. Fredrik De Klerk was working with Nasionale Party reformers and with the African National Congress led by Nelson Mandela to end apartheid. In 1994, 10 days before the country's first democratic election, De Klerk ordered to lower down the Oranje, Blanje, Blou (because non-white South Africans consider it to be the "Apartheid Flag" as this flag was tainted because the apartheid regime used them). When Mandela won, he ordered a contest to draw the new flag of South Africa, this flag 🇿🇦 was chosen, this was made by a Anglo-South African, based on the ANC flag, the current flag of the Netherlands (🇳🇱) and the Unio

The old flag dosent represent the majority of south Africans, it represents a time when most people in south africa where not recognized as equals.

The old flag represented the Dutch heritage from the Dutch empire with the three countries that united to form South Africa, the Boer Republic of Transvaal, Orange Free State and the Union jack represents the British Cape Colony. There was also Natal but nobody cares about them enough to put them on the flag.

The old flag is literally an ancient Dutch flag with the Union Jack in it, in addition to the flags of two Boer republics. Not that creative. The new one is so colorful and beautiful.

Politics aside. I grew up with the old flag, I always loved it, it was a unique design and a unique and beautiful combination in a tri color. A tricolor with something in the middle, like India or Argentina, is kust my favorite flag design. So yeah. Oranje Blanje Blou Bo.
