The Fania All-Stars popularized New York salsa during the 1970s by organizing concerts that spotlighted the salsa world's biggest stars -- Featuring a lineup of Ray Barretto, Willie Colón, Johnny Pacheco, Rubén Blades, Hector Lavoe, Ismael Miranda, Cheo Feliciano, Bobby Cruz, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, and special guests like Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, and Eddie Palmieri. Fania All-Stars usually recorded their albums live and featured long jams with plenty of space for solos for each of the salsa heroes on-stage at the time.

The Fania All-Stars recorded eight studio albums during the 1980s, gradually moving from the overly polished sound of the late '70s to a more organic Latin jazz. In 1994, the group celebrated the 30th anniversary of Fania Records with live dates in San Juan, Miami, and New York.

Fania All-Stars

Héctor Lavoe’s EL SABIO was originally released in 1980 and blends rhythms and contemporary sounds with some Puerto Rican attitude.

El Sabio turns a piece of folk wisdom into a danceable platform, punching up the power through a line of charging brass leading to Lavoe’s defiant verses to “El Sabio”, an impertinent boastful snob. This is a confrontational song full of Lavoe’s bravura—recounting rivalries wrapped in hypocrisies. Sporting the similar tinge of strings as many Fania productions of this time. “Para Ochun” y “Yemaya” goes back to the African basics evoking the saints of the Ifa’s Regla de Ocha in a call-and-response coro to these two deities. It departs from the traditional, replacing the sonero with the various instruments alternatively taking turns soloing the verses.

Luis Marquetti’s bolero “Plazos Traicioneros” falls on Lavoe like rain from the sky. Smooth, melodic and seamless and fused with emotional sentiment, it is a laid-back break from the rest of the dance tunes. “Noche de Farra” gets an updated New York beat on this otherwise laid-back cha cha cha style popularized by La Sonora Matancera in the 1950s.

EL SABIO is out today, and available in HI-RES AUDIO for the first time!

Fania All-Stars

As we celebrate 60 years of Fania, it is important that we celebrate the first album released on the label, and that’s what we are doing today, as we announce the reissue of: Johnny Pacheco’s CAÑONAZO—the 1964 release that launched Fania Records. Pacheco, who co-founded Fania, served as its creative figurehead, while his work as a musician, composer, arranger, producer, and bandleader was instrumental in shaping the modern Latin music landscape. The long out-of-print Cañonazo returns to vinyl on SEPTEMBER 13, and is available for PRE-ORDER TODAY: found.ee/johnny-pacheco-canonazo_pivot

Featuring all-analog mastering by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, the reissue is pressed on 180-gram vinyl and housed in an old-school style tip-on jacket, replicating its original artwork. A 180-gram “Red Smoke” color vinyl variant (limited to 300 copies), with a bundle option that includes a collectible Fania T-shirt, is available for pre-order at Fania.com.

Cañonazo also ushered in a new era for Pacheco, as it introduced his new band, Pacheco y su Nuevo Tumbao, featuring Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez on vocals. With the release of this album, Fania Records began its ascent in the Latin music world. Pacheco, meanwhile, would go on to record scores of albums—both as a soloist, as well as with many of Fania’s artists, including popular titles with Celia Cruz, Justo Betancourt, and Papo Lucca. As Fania’s musical director, Pacheco oversaw hundreds of recordings and, in the late ’60s, formed the legendary Fania All Stars collective. Beginning in the ’70s, he expanded into film scoring—working on such projects as the 1972 documentary Our Latin Thing and 1974’s Salsa.
