Following my post yesterday, some of you asked me for an update on how my 7th grade classes did in the game we played trying to avert the sack of Rome to the Visigoths in 410. In answer I give you this famous painting from Thomas Cole's 1836 "Course of Empire" series. 😏 They didn't save Rome but they gave it a good go! One of the two classes overthrew the Emperor Honorius, which made for an interesting afternoon. Teaching history can be fun and it's great to see kids taking an interest in the past.

Some eagle eyed viewers have noticed and questioned the tea tin marked "VISIGOTHS" that's often visible on the shelf behind me in my videos. Most of the time it contains paperclips, but once a year it becomes a prop during a historical game I have my 7th graders play. They play officials in the Western Roman Empire trying to decide how to hold the empire together while Rome itself is under threat of invasion in the year 410. In our game the tin holds an unknown (to them) number of armies from a Risk board game. Can they muster enough troops to save Rome? We play the game in tomorrow's class!

I gave a lecture yesterday for the Gallier Historic House in New Orleans, talking about environmental history and the "Year Without Summer" (1816), which is something of a misnomer. It was much more complicated than that! This was the subject of my doctoral dissertation. It's much more academic/scholarly than the videos I do on my channel, but I thought I'd share it for those who might be interested.

You know who this is. But do you know how he came to power? The new video, which is about him, is nearing completion. He'd probably prefer that you skip it. I hope you won't! He lands on my channel toward the end of this week, if all goes well.

Last week I visited my old campus and saw the first classroom where I ever taught a college level history class, 14 years ago. Still looks much the same. This was the start of the journey to this channel. I'm hard at work on the next video, by the way!

The new video is almost finished! I'm hoping "The Rise and Fall of Pan Am" will be done at the end of this week, fingers crossed. In fact there will be TWO new videos because I'm also putting out a special vid that shows the behind-the-scenes of how I make videos for the channel. That one will be out in a few days. Thanks for watching and waiting!

Hey all! Most of you know me for my historical work but I also write books! My new one, "Daniel Vanished," is a mystery novel and those who have read it so far are really enjoying it. You can get it on Kindle and in paperback (the paperback is more fun IMO). Link at the end of this post. Hope you get it and enjoy! Yes, I am working on a new history video. 😏 www.amazon.com/dp/B0CYWTRDKF

The Play Button has arrived! My students were pretty stoked to see this in person. Thank you to everyone who subscribed and helped me get here. A year ago I could never have thought this was possible. Now back to work on more history videos!

Hello friends and fans! I'm hard at work on the new video, which I hope will be out in the next few days... we're going way back to the early 13th century on this one! The tragic fate of Constantinople in 1204 is an amazing story full of greed, revenge, misunderstandings, and one bad decision after another. Here are some of the sources I've been using. Some interesting reading and I hope it will be an illuminating video. See you soon, thanks for watching and subscribing!

My friend ‪@JoeBuiDesertTrippin‬ , who has appeared on my channel (and I've been on his), just came out with a video where he visits the remote Mojave Desert site of a recent mass murder. Joe does a lot of cool stuff on his channel involving desert California, which has a dark and fascinating history. Check out his channel for more, there are some very interesting things lurking in that part of the desert!
