We're OK. We've been gone for a couple of weeks. Spent about a week up at the Off-Grid cabin, home for a day, and then took again for a family gathering Utah. We're back home , unpacked, and getting settled into the swing of things again. We have a new video ready, which should be out today ♥

Are you hardening off your starts? The weather this year has been perfect for us. I haven't had to bring them inside but one time. After 3 full days of shade we are transitioning to morning sun today ☀️🌱
They will get a few hours today, then back to shade, then a few more hours each day until a full day. We are almost there!!! And that 10 day forecast is so tempting!! It's what may be lingering beyond it that helps me stay the course.

Cabbage moths, also known as diamondback moths, are unwelcome visitors. These seemingly delicate moths target a whole family of vegetables beloved by home growers: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower, and even cabbages themselves. The real damage comes from their offspring, the cabbage worm. These green caterpillars with faint stripes have a surprising appetite, munching through leaves and leaving behind a trail of holes. In severe infestations, they can destroy young plants entirely or stunt their growth, leaving gardeners with a disappointing harvest.

The impact of cabbage moths goes beyond a few chewed leaves. Their presence can be a constant source of worry. Cabbage moths are found nearly everywhere in the world, except for Antarctica and some remote islands. This means gardeners almost anywhere have to be on the lookout for these pests. What's more frustrating is that, in some areas, cabbage moths have developed resistance to traditional insecticides.

Luckily, there are ways to outsmart these persistent moths. Gardeners can employ a multi-pronged approach to prevent damage. Floating row covers, made of a lightweight fabric, can be used to physically exclude adult moths from laying eggs on the plants. Companion planting, strategically placing other herbs or flowers near your brassicas, can confuse the moths or attract beneficial insects that prey on the cabbage worms. Finally, staying vigilant and manually removing any eggs or young caterpillars you find on your plants can help keep the population in check. By using a combination of these methods, gardeners can enjoy a bountiful harvest without becoming a buffet for cabbage moths.

If you're going the row-cover route, and you think to yourself "it's very early spring, I'll just wait to put the covers on" - don't! You'd be surprised how early these moths emerge in the wild. When you move your plants out, put your covers on.

Are your potatoes determinate, or indeterminate? Here’s a listing of the most common types of each. This year, we are growing Kennebec in our garden. It’s a favorite of ours, because of how easy they are to care for and how well they store and can.
𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀
Known for their earliness and compact growth, determinate potato varieties are perfect for short growing seasons or limited space. Here are some popular examples:
▪️ Yukon Gold: This popular variety produces bright yellow, waxy potatoes with a delicious buttery flavor.
▪️ Norland Red: Offering small, red-skinned potatoes with a creamy white interior, this variety excels in boiling, roasting, and potato salad.
▪️ Chieftain: A good all-purpose option, Chieftain has a smooth, white skin and a creamy interior, making it great for baking, mashing, and roasting.
▪️ Red Pontiac: With a distinctive red skin and white interior, Red Pontiac is known for its excellent boiling and mashing qualities.
▪️ Kennebec: This widely used variety boasts high yields and good storage qualities. It has a smooth, white skin and a creamy interior.

Indeterminate potato varieties have a longer growing season and sprawling vines, potentially leading to higher yields. Here are some common examples:

Did you know there are 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 and 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 Potatoes? There's a big different between the two, so it's very important to know what you're growing and how you should care for them.
𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀:
🥔Bushy and Compact: These grow as bushy plants with limited vine growth.
🥔Early Harvests: Mature faster, producing tubers in just 55-70 days, ideal for short growing seasons.
🥔Single Layer of Tubers: Form a single layer of potatoes just beneath the soil surface.
🥔Lower Yield: Produce fewer potatoes compared to indeterminate varieties.
🥔Less Maintenance: Don't require hilling soil around the base as the tubers grow.
𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀:
🥔Vining and Sprawling: Grow long vines that continue throughout the season.
🥔Later Harvests: Take longer to mature, typically 110-135 days.
🥔Multiple Layers of Tubers: Can produce tubers in multiple layers if you hill soil around the base as the stems grow.

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗱 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁: Before we get into this post, I want to wish my wife the most wonderful Birthday today! 🎂 You are absolutely amazing and I'm so thankful for the adventures and time we've had. We've raised an amazing family and have built a wonderful life together, and I'm looking forward to what the future brings to us ♥
𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹'𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁: Friends let me tell you a story, my garden beds after 6 years of pushing them to the limit of high intensity plantings, were spent. Oh, I had done all the things amending them every fall, keeping them mulched well, but I could tell they and I needed to rest and rejuvenate.
So we spent last year resting our land. An extra deep layer of mulch was added along with compost. And as I begin planting this year my garden soil looks so healthy. They are holding water well and just full of life.
So me and my worms friends smile as we are ready to get back to the business of growing food again ❤️
